Live Well: A Weekend of Health, Hope and Healing

From Friday night, September 11, through Saturday afternoon, September 12, Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church and Smyrna Seventh-day Adventist Church came together for a powerful and inspiring Health Evangelism Weekend entitled “Live Well: A Weekend of Health, Hope and Healing.”

This health evangelistic meeting was more than a series of health lectures. It was an experience that brought together faith, practical health education, spiritual growth, and community.

The collaboration between Berean SDA Church and Smyrna SDA Church demonstrated what can happen when churches come together with a shared desire to minister to the whole person. From Friday night's discussion on hypertension to Saturday's messages on spiritual strength, mental wellness, nutrition, and metabolic health, attendees walked away with information and inspiration that could make a meaningful difference in their lives.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Colin Ross for blessing us with the Word, his knowledge, and his passion for helping God's people live healthier and more purposeful lives.

This truly was a weekend not worth missing. “Live Well” reminded us that health is a gift, wisdom is essential, and our hope ultimately comes from God. May the lessons from this weekend continue to inspire us to Live Well, Live with Hope, and Live with Healing.

The weekend featured insightful presentations by Dr. Colin Ross, who combined health education with biblical principles to remind us that God desires His people to experience health, hope, and healing in every area of life.

Friday Night: Understanding Hypertension

The weekend began Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. with a timely presentation focused on hypertension in the Black community. Dr. Ross simplified the science behind blood pressure through the familiar numbers 120/80, explaining how resistance and volume affect the body.

He also introduced the A-B-C-D-E method to help attendees better understand common blood pressure medications and discussed practical lifestyle choices that can make a difference, including reducing salt, increasing potassium-rich foods such as bananas, and incorporating regular exercise.

But the message went beyond physical health. Dr. Ross addressed the connection between identity, psychology, and self-perception, encouraging the audience to recognize how emotional and psychological factors can influence overall health. It was a reminder that true wellness involves the whole person.

Saturday Morning: “Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise”

Saturday morning began with an uplifting time of praise and worship before Dr. Ross presented the message “Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise,” based on Ephesians 6:10-17.

The message emphasized that while health and financial well-being have their place, spiritual wisdom and strength must remain at the center of our lives. Dr. Ross connected physical health with mental clarity and highlighted the importance of proper rest and the growing problem of insomnia.

He also challenged the church to become more proactive in addressing issues affecting families and communities, including alcohol, voting rights, and the powerful influence of social media algorithms on children and families.

The message reminded us that living well is not simply about what we eat or how much we exercise. It is also about being spiritually grounded, mentally alert, and engaged with the world around us.

Saturday Afternoon: "You don't have to diet anymore" - Food, Insulin, and Metabolic Health

The final presentation Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. turned the spotlight toward food quality and metabolic health. Dr. Ross explored how poor dietary choices can contribute to conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cancer.

One of the key topics was the Glycemic Index (GI) and how the effect food has on blood sugar and insulin can be more significant than simply counting calories. Using an engaging “insulin fire” analogy, Dr. Ross illustrated how repeatedly consuming poor-quality foods can place tremendous demands on the body's insulin system and contribute to long-term health problems.

He also introduced technology designed to help people make healthier food choices through a simple green, yellow, and red traffic-light system, allowing individuals to make informed decisions without feeling that healthy eating has to be restrictive.

The afternoon concluded with a valuable Q&A session, giving attendees an opportunity to ask questions about food, medications, hydration, and other important health concerns.
